Video: Society Staples (Portraits of Purpose)

Lesley Teoh

Society Staples is a social enterprise that offers team building and sports activities to challenge misconceptions about the disabled in Singapore.

An inclusive society without barriers is possible. Find out how Society Staples is challenging misconceptions about persons with disabilities through sports and team building activities.

“No man is an island” is not just the title of a famous poem by John Donne, but it succinctly tells us that no human being can thrive when isolated from others.

Through team building activities that involve blindfolds, sign language and dragonboating, Society Staples aims to raise awareness, educate, correct and challenge public misconceptions of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) and to encourage healthy interaction and understanding between the community and PwDs. Participants not only learn to communicate better, grow in empathy and become a better team, they step into the shoes of a different body and walk into a new mindset.

An inclusive society without barriers is possible, and it starts with every and anybody who makes the choice to.

Watch the video below to find out how Society Staples is challenging misconceptions about PwDs by encouraging interactions between PwDs and the community, or read our interview with Debra Lam, Society Staples founder to learn more about the story behind the social enterprise.
